In photography there are many different looks can be captured on the face. There is happiness, joy, pensiveness, curiosity, but the best capture is the one that is natural. To capture the essence of someone they need to think they are not being observed. To accomplish that I tell them the camera is off. In reality it is on catching the moments I will preserve. The unintended moment when they put the 'fake' aside, I usually have primed them with a request like recite a line from the movie Wizard of Oz. or Star Wars. Sure to elicit a smile. The best result is to ask them who their favorite wrestler is. When they are showing you, take the photo of the Macho Man (the most popular response).
There is bittersweet feeling of appreciation for the fleeting nature of life that photography captures. Life can give us a reminder of the impermanence and transience of all things, including joy and sorrow, beauty and decay. But a photo caught in the manner described above cherishes the present moment, acknowledging beauty, strength, and feeling gratitude for the time we have together.
